World Class Mentoring is Key.

World-class mentoring is key to boosting start-ups, says REC Director of Business Support

Policy announcements at last week’s Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham included new measures to support would-be entrepreneurs. The REC’ s Academy for Business has worked with hundreds of developing businesses within the recruitment sector and will be providing practical feedback to Government on what measures can make a real difference.

The Government’s new ‘Work for Yourself’ will give the unemployed access to business mentors and start-up loans. Encouraging entrepreneurship is seen as a key means of boosting job creation at a time when the private sector will be expected to compensate for expected job losses in the public sector.

Commenting on the Government’s approach, Sam Morris, Director of Business Support within the REC Academy for Business says:

“Supporting new businesses is more important than ever and there has certainly been a surge in start-up activity within the recruitment sector. Access to start-up loans and business mentors is a decent start. However, it is not so much about the ‘what’ as the ‘how’ and a crucial factor will be the expertise and quality of the actual mentors that are put forward. Representative bodies such as the REC will continue to play a pivotal role in driving business development through coaching and expert guidance that is tailored to the sector."

The need to boost entrepreneurship and job creation was one of the core messages within the REC’s pre-election Manifesto. In addition to mentoring and support services, a key priority is to support businesses through the tax regime and by stripping down unnecessary red tape.

The REC was represented at last week’s Conservative Party Conference and used the event to promote the positive role that recruiters play in helping businesses of all sizes – including start-ups – to attract the right calibre of both temporary and permanent staff.
